The History of Gingerbread Cookies

Gingerbread cookies, originally made of breadcrumbs and spices, were popularized in Europe.

The word “gingerbread” originated from the word for ginger, originally spelled “gingebras.”

Gingerbread cookies also have their history in sailing, trading, and the beginning of the spice market trade.

When sailors would bring ginger for use in cooking. As trade routes opened up between Asia and the West, ginger was imported from countries like China and India. This created a demand for biscuit-like foods spiced with ginger while at sea.

The Process Of Making Gingerbread Cookies

Making gingerbread cookies was a long process that took several days.

First, you needed to make the biscuits. This involved combining flour, molasses, and salt with yeast in a warm area until it was spongy. You would then knead the dough until it was smooth and let it sit for eight hours so that the yeast could properly ferment the dough.

Once you had your dough, you could roll out little balls of it and cut them into shapes with cookie cutters.

Today? Much, much easier!
