Cooking with Terpenes – Great Tips for Cannabis Cooks

man cooking vegetables

Admittedly, I knew very little about Cannabis Terpenes before writing this. If we’re in the same boat, please give me a virtual “high”-five!

I have heard of them, yes. But I guess I never really took the proper time to get better acquainted with these aromatics and I wish I did sooner!

Why?

Because terpenes are fascinating – especially when cooking with cannabis.

I’m going to share with you what I found out so you can enjoy cooking with cannabis terpenes too!

When you rip a basil leaf and that intoxicating smell lingers out to find your nose? That’s a natural terpene!

Have you ever cut a lemon and got gifted with a burst of fresh citrus?

You got it! That’s a natural terpene.

Cannabis also has natural terpenes, and they are responsible for the flavor profile and aromas you love and enjoy!

There’s no sexy way of saying Terpenes. Plain and simple: Ter-Peens.

There IS a sexy way of cooking with them though!

Terpenes are aromatic oils that enhance cannabis varieties with flavors like citrus, berry, mint, and pine.

They are naturally occurring compounds that give the strain of cannabis that you’re using their natural aroma.

Terpenes are secreted or produced in the same glands as CBD & THC. The combination of cannabinoids and terpenes is called The Entourage Effect.

In nature, the Cannabis plant creates it’s own terpenes based on weather, soil, climate and elevation to repel bugs or intruders.

Some terpenes may support focus and attention, while others induce feelings of relaxation and peace.

If you’re a beginner like me, you’ll want to choose cannabis strains that have a higher terpene profile. 2-4% is considered reasonably high.

Choosing a higher terpene level makes it easier to decide what flavors to pair your cannabis dishes with!

Also, consider: do you want to feel more uplifted, energized, and awake? A citrus terpene is the best for that. (Limonene) Here’s a great recipe.

Feeling chill and relaxed? Terpenes called linalool ( think lavender) contain these feel-good- and chill out compounds. Check out our cooking products.

The exciting thing about cooking with cannabis and terpenes is that you have full control over flavor.

Here are the top 3 professional tips I’ve discovered when cooking with Cannabis terpenes;

  1. High temperatures destroy cannabis terpenes so just think slow, low, and roast.
  2. Always, always, always decarb your cannabis first. Click here to learn how.
  3. Store your cannabis in a dark, cool spot to preserve the terpenes.
