Alcohol And Weed: What Happens When You Mix Them?
Alcohol and marijuana have long been paired together. Today we’re talking about Alcohol And Weed: What Happens When You Mix Them
So what really happens if you drink alcohol before using weed?
Drinking before using weed can intensify weed’s effects. This may be great for experienced cannabis users, but a little much for beginners!
This is because alcohol increases the absorption of weed’s main psychoactive ingredient, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
And because of this, it generally results in a stronger high.
While this might be nice for some folks, it can cause others to “green out”.
Green out refers to a range of unpleasant physical symptoms that can result from a strong high or when you mix booze and bud.
Some acute symptoms of green out include:
There’s another interesting thing that can happen with you combine cannabis and cocktails called the entourage effect.
The entourage effect is another term that refers to the synergistic “happy” effects of many substances, such as alcohol and marijuana together.
It means that many active ingredients are combined together in a single compound, such as booze and THC.
The entourage effect is the combination of acting on many areas of the brain with a single compound, to get scientific.
But the interesting part? You might not need much alcohol to change the way your body absorbs THC.
How cool is that?
Back in 2015, a study was conducted with 19 participants.
They drank either a placebo or a small amount of alcohol.
Then, ten minutes later, they used a vaporizer to inhale either a low or a high dose of THC.
The researchers found significantly higher peak THC levels among participants who had alcohol versus those who had a placebo.
This was true for both low and high doses of THC.
Assume you’ve had an extra drink or two before enjoying weed.
Using cannabis before drinking alcohol may minimize the effects of alcohol.
Emphasis on “MAY”. Results will always vary from person to person.
This means you might be tipsier than you feel, increasing your risk of becoming overly intoxicated so go slow!
If you use weed before drinking, pay extra attention to how much you’ve had to drink.
To err on the side of caution, assume you’ve had a bit more to drink than you actually have, or aim to drink less than you usually would without using weed.
Keep doing this if you’re going to combine the two substances together until you’ve found a happy medium – and you’re not ‘overly high’.
You may, at one point in your cannabis-consuming life, encounter a green out.
If you’re noticing symptoms like breaking out into a clammy sweat, these tips can help you make it through:
