Alcohol and marijuana have long been paired together. Today we’re talking about Alcohol And Weed: What Happens When You Mix Them
So what really happens if you drink alcohol before using weed?
Drinking before using weed can intensify weed’s effects. This may be great for experienced cannabis users, but a little much for beginners!
This is because alcohol increases the absorption of weed’s main psychoactive ingredient, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
And because of this, it generally results in a stronger high.
While this might be nice for some folks, it can cause others to “green out”.
What Does Green Out Mean?
Green out refers to a range of unpleasant physical symptoms that can result from a strong high or when you mix booze and bud.
Some acute symptoms of green out include:
sweating
dizziness
nausea
vomiting
There’s another interesting thing that can happen with you combine cannabis and cocktails called the entourage effect.
What Is The Entourage Effect?
The entourage effect is another term that refers to the synergistic “happy” effects of many substances, such as alcohol and marijuana together.
It means that many active ingredients are combined together in a single compound, such as booze and THC.
The entourage effect is the combination of acting on many areas of the brain with a single compound, to get scientific.
But the interesting part? You might not need much alcohol to change the way your body absorbs THC.
How cool is that?
Back in 2015, a study was conducted with 19 participants.
They drank either a placebo or a small amount of alcohol.
Then, ten minutes later, they used a vaporizer to inhale either a low or a high dose of THC.
The researchers found significantly higher peak THC levels among participants who had alcohol versus those who had a placebo.
This was true for both low and high doses of THC.
Weed Before Alcohol
Assume you’ve had an extra drink or two before enjoying weed.
Using cannabis before drinking alcohol may minimize the effects of alcohol.
Emphasis on “MAY”. Results will always vary from person to person.
This means you might be tipsier than you feel, increasing your risk of becoming overly intoxicated so go slow!
If you use weed before drinking, pay extra attention to how much you’ve had to drink.
To err on the side of caution, assume you’ve had a bit more to drink than you actually have, or aim to drink less than you usually would without using weed.
Keep doing this if you’re going to combine the two substances together until you’ve found a happy medium – and you’re not ‘overly high’.
How to Handle a Green Out
You may, at one point in your cannabis-consuming life, encounter a green out.
If you’re noticing symptoms like breaking out into a clammy sweat, these tips can help you make it through:
Stay Calm! It’s not easy. We know! Just have patience. The feelings you’re experiencing WILL go away in time. Focus on music, a great Netflix show -anything to take your mind off it.
Sit or lie down. If you’re feeling dizzy, just find a quiet space to rest until you feel better.
Eat or drink to boost blood sugar. Try something nourishing and healing like soup broth, or a sugary juice – it may help relieve any possible dizziness.
Stay hydrated. Booth cannabis and alcohol can leave you feeling dehydrated so drink plenty of water.
Lemon! Lemon contains a special chemical compound that *may* decrease the effects of THC in the brain. Squeeze some directly in your mouth, or in a glass of water.
Crushed peppercorns. You may not always have these on hand, but the terpenes in peppercorn might help you from greening out! Crush a bunch up, and sniff. Not too close though – you don’t want to get them in your nose.
Grab a pal and ask for help! Get a bud to keep you company and this will help pass the time.
